Newcastle United are known to be looking for a new number one goalkeeper this summer.

Newcastle United should consider moving for Real Sociedad goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli this summer, as they look set to miss out on another of Rafael Benitez’s targets.

Manchester City are said to be closing in on snapping up Pepe Reina by the Telegraph, which could be a disappointment for Newcastle.

Geronimo Rulli - Real Sociedad

According to the Chronicle, Benitez had been planning a reunion with the Spanish stopper at St. James’ Park, but he is set to be left disappointed.

City’s move for Reina could leave Rulli available though, and that could actually benefit Newcastle.

The Telegraph say that Pep Guardiola had wanted to bring in Rulli before he targeted Reina, but learnt that the Argentine goalkeeper would only move from Sociedad if he was promised first-team football.

As a result, City had to pull out of a deal, which would have seen them activate their buy-back clause on the 25-year-old.

And Newcastle could now benefit from that by bringing Rulli to Tyneside.

Rulli has proven to be a stand out goalkeeper in La Liga, and he still has years left in his career to develop.

With Newcastle looking for a new number one, Rulli looks like a potentially perfect option for Benitez’s side.

And it may turn out that missing out on Reina, actually works out in Newcastle’s favour, if they are now able to complete a deal for Rulli.
