Charlton Athletic are back in the Championship after a dramatic League One playoff final win over Sunderland at Wembley Stadium this afternoon.

The Addicks made the worst possible start though, as defender Mouhamadou-Naby Sarr’s backpass evaded goalkeeper Dillon Phillips and nestled in the net.

After one of the most bizarre own goals in playoff history, Charlton needed to haul themselves back into the game – and they did just that.

Lyle Taylor’s cross was tapped home by Ben Purrington at the back post to equalise before the break, but it looked like another Charlton v Sunderland playoff final would be heading to extra time.

However, Charlton struck the winner late on, with Patrick Bauer scoring to send the Addicks back to the Championship with virtually the last kick of the game.

Sunderland players and fans were left distraught at full time, but Newcastle fans took great joy out of the result, with even the Magpies official account celebrating one thing.

Newcastle congratulated ex-Magpies midfielder Lee Bowyer on guiding Charlton into the Championship, though you can be sure that beating Sunderland was a major factor in the message.
