Newcastle United have been linked with the Aston Villa man earlier today.

If Newcastle United sell Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dwight Gayle only to bring in Jonathan Kodjia from Aston Villa, it would have to be classed as an error.

The Sun have suggested that Newcastle are open to offers for both Mitrovic and Gayle this summer.

However, if they let the pair go, only to bring in Kodjia, then it will be hard to argue that the move has been a step forward.

Jonathan Kodjia of Aston Villa misses a penality during the Sky Bet Championship match between Aston Villa and Bristol City at Villa Park on February 28, 2017 in Birmingham, England.

Newcastle’s interest in Kodjia has been reported by the Express and Star today, as Rafael Benitez’s side are keen to capitalise on the claret and blues’ financial struggles.

Kodjia is regarded as one of the Championship’s most dangerous front-men, but he is no more proven than either Gayle or Mitrovic in the second tier.

The Newcastle pair both have hit the back of the net regularly in the Championship during their careers, and are younger than Kodjia, therefore they have more room to improve.

Ivory Coast's forward Jonathan Kodjia celebrates after scoring a goal during their international friendly football match against Russia in Krasnodar on March 24, 2017.

Selling them both to simply sign another unproven striker makes very little sense for the Magpies.

And Benitez should reconsider buying Kodjia, as it would be a thoroughly underwhelming addition.
