Newcastle United are closing in on the signing of Sassuolo defender Rogerio, and the deal could be done within days.

That’s according to TNT Sports over in Brazil, who claim Rogerio’s move to St James’ Park is now drawing closer and closer.

It’s stated that Newcastle would be paying a fee of around €15million (£12.5million) to bring Rogerio to the Premier League.

Rogerio allegedly had interest from two other clubs, but prioritised a move to Newcastle ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline.

Newcastle fans will absolutely recognise Rogerio’s name from transfer windows past.

Newcastle were in talks to sign Rogerio in 2020, but no deal was done. Interestingly, the same price tag – £12.5million – was being discussed then too.

Rogerio, 24, has started 17 league games for Sassuolo this season, playing exclusively as a left back.

In his last start for Sassuolo, Rogerio picked up an assist. Flying up the left flank, he crossed for Abdou Harroui to score the only goal against Cagliari.

Tuttomercatoweb then suggested that the Brazilian is ‘almost unstoppable’ when he goes forward.

That sounds great for Newcastle, who have been seeking competition for Jamal Lewis at left back.

Rogerio was officially a Juventus player for three years but never actually made an appearance for the Turin giants.

All of Rogerio’s first-team action has come with Sassuolo, but he is now ready to try something new and finally head to Newcastle.

Given Newcastle’s past interest, you have to assume this is a Steve Nickson move, recommending Rogerio after seemingly missing out on Mitchel Bakker.

Newcastle now need to hope that Rogerio is worth the wait and can instantly make an impact to keep the Magpies in the Premier League.
