Newcastle United want Sander Berge and are offering a loan-to-buy deal for the Sheffield United midfielder ahead of deadline day.

That’s according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, who claims that Newcastle are offering a loan with obligation to buy for Berge.

Fulham are offering £20million cash to sign Berge permanent but Newcastle are wading into the race.

The Magpies are allowing Jonjo Shelvey to leave St James’ Park for a move to Nottingham Forest.

That means a midfielder is now wanted at Newcastle and Berge appears to be emerging as the top target for Eddie Howe and co.

Newcastle will surely have to offer more than the £20million Fulham have proposed in order to get this deal done.

Berge has just 18 months left on his Sheffield United deal and that means a sale before Tuesday’s deadline could make some sense.

Sander Berge’s agents heads to London amid Newcastle United chase

TV2 in Berge’s native Norway now add more to this story.

Berge’s representatives Morten Wivestad and Mike Kjølø are thought to be in London, making the trip to England ahead of a possible deal.

It’s noted that Brighton and Hove Albion could join the race for Berge if they choose to sell Moises Caicedo to Arsenal.

The report adds that Sheffield United need to make a big sale for their accounts and Berge is the man set to go.

Berge, 24, has impressed in the Championship this season, bagging four goals and three assists in 19 appearances.

The Norwegian midfielder is a giant at 6ft 5in tall but is far more than just a destroyer.

Berge has real skill on the ball and is very effective as a box-to-box midfielder, as the Blades have seen both in the Premier League and the Championship.

Hailed as a ‘complete’ midfielder by former Blades boss Chris Wilder, Berge isn’t a like-for-like replacement for Jonjo Shelvey but can bring real quality to Newcastle’s engine room if they can beat Fulham to a deal.
