Atalanta star Robin Gosens is allegedly ready to accept an offer to join Newcastle United – and that could lead to Paul Dummett playing at centre back.

The Chronicle report that sources close to Gosens is ‘ready to say yes’ to Newcastle’s offer to sign this month.

Tuttomercatoweb claim that the offer is a three-year deal with a salary of €3.5million – around £56,000-a-week.

Gosens is seemingly interested in joining Newcastle in what would be quite the capture for Eddie Howe and co.

Gosens, 27, was simply outstanding last season with 11 goals and six assists before then shining for Germany at Euro 2020.

Praised as being ‘more decisive than Trent Alexander-Arnold’ by former Serie A defender Roberto Cravero having reached up goals and assists without taking set pieces.

The problem with Gosens is that he hasn’t really played this season.

Injuries mean Gosens has played just six Serie A games this season and hasn’t played at all since September.

Gosens is better as a wing back than as a full back, and that may lead to a change of approach from Eddie Howe.

The report suggests that left back Paul Dummett could move more permanently to play as a left-sided centre back.

Dummett would make more sense as a left-sided centre back in a three-man defence than in a flat back four.

That still seems like a gamble for Newcastle, who are seeking defensive stability at the back to stay in the Premier League.

Playing Dummett as a centre back doesn’t seem ideal, as he wasn’t a top Premier League performer at left back, never mind centre back.

Landing Gosens would be a huge move for Newcastle, but you could forgive fans for being worried about Dummett at centre back.
