Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United are ready to compete with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool for Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, according to journalist Miguel Delaney’s Reading the Game newsletter in The Independent this afternoon (12:36pm).
Delaney has reported that Newcastle are wiling to spend big on Darwin, but the Uruguay international striker does not want to join them.
Liverpool have been heavily linked with Nunez, with 90min reporting that the Merseyside outfit believe that they will secure the services of the 22-year-old in an £85 million transfer deal.
Delaney wrote: “Newcastle United would be willing to spend on Darwin, but it is a sign of their remaining status that a strand of player still doesn’t want to join them.
“As it is, the Saudi Arabian project are looking at Dominic Calvert-Lewin and James Ward-Prowse.”

Liverpool more appealing than Newcastle United to Darwin Nunez
In our view, Liverpool are a more appealing and attractive club than Newcastle United for most players, including Darwin Nunez.

Yes, Newcastle have wealthy owners in PIF, but they are not ready to challenge for major trophies yet.
Liverpool won the FA Cup and the League Cup this past campaign and came close to clinching the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League as well.
Nunez is one of the best young strikers in the world, and we can understand why he would pick Liverpool over Newcastle now.
The striker scored 26 goals and gave four assists in the league and scored six goals in the Champions League for Benfica this past season.
