Alex Gilliead’s superb performances have got many a Magpie crowing this season but the forward doesn’t know when he’ll get the chance to prove his worth.
Talented Newcastle United youngster Alex Gilliead admits he is unsure about his immediate future at St James’ Park, The Chronicle report.
The 20-year-old has received rave reviews for his impressive performances on loan with Luton Town in League Two this season, while his direct dribbling has drawn comparisons with former Newcastle greats Chris Waddle, Paul Gascoigne and Peter Beardsley.
Consequently, Luton manager Nathan Jones tipped Gilliead to be a future Premier League star, though the England Under-20 international has admitted that he is not certain what the next step in his career will be with his temporary deal with The Hatters set to expire in January.
“I’m not sure [whether he will return to St James’ in January]. I’ll have to speak to Newcastle to see what they want me to do, because I’m their player,” Gilliead told The Chronicle.
“I’ve obviously been in contact with Nathan and Luton and I’ll just decide when the time comes and when we’re all happy to sit down and talk about it.
“I speak to one of the [Newcastle] Under-21 coaches quite a bit. He’s always messaging me, asking how I’m doing and keeping on top of it.”
For such a proud footballing community, there has been a startling paucity of young talent emerging from within the ranks at Newcastle in recent years, with now-departed centre-back Steven Taylor (below) the most recent ‘local lad’ to don the famous black and white on a regular basis.
However, the eye-catching performances of the Shotley Bridge-born talent have raised hopes that the club’s famously vociferous fanbase finally have one they can call their own to serenade on a Saturday.
