Newcastle United want Diogo Costa and are already eyeing up a January move to sign the Porto goalkeeper.
That’s according to Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Noticias, who claim that Newcastle are looking towards Costa as a possible addition.
It’s stated that Newcastle will keep an eye on Costa with a view to a January bid to bring the Portuguese ace to the Premier League.
Costa is just the latest Porto man linked with Newcastle, following on from the likes of Evanilson and Pepe earlier in the summer.
Newcastle United want Diogo Costa – The Verdict
This one just doesn’t seem to make sense for us.
Newcastle have just secured a quality goalkeeper by signing Nick Pope from Burnley.
Pope has made such a huge impact that he has been named Newcastle’s Player of the Month for August.
Pope is only 30 and should have plenty left in the tank to keep going as Newcastle’s first-choice goalkeeper for years to come.
Costa, 22, is first-choice goalkeeper at Porto and will be looking to kick on and become Portugal’s number one too.
Costa would expect plenty of playing time and Porto will be seeking huge money; £51.5million is the price in Costa’s release clause and Porto don’t want to take less than that.
When you factor in the cost and the playing time expectations, signing Costa as competition for Pope just doesn’t make sense.
Sure, Newcastle may fancy adding another goalkeeper after Martin Dubravka’s loan move to Manchester United, which could become permanent.
Yet Costa just doesn’t seem to fit the bill, even if he has been described as ‘incredible’ by former coach Manuel Tulipa.
A quality goalkeeper and a huge talent, Costa will likely earn a big move at some stage but with Pope settled between the sticks for Newcastle, we can’t see Tyneside being his destination.
