Paulo Fonseca is interested in becoming Newcastle United boss – and he appears to be Amanda Staveley’s pick for the job after Steve Bruce’s exit.

That’s according to The Telegraph, who claim that Fonseca is one of the frontrunners for the Newcastle job after seeing them part ways with Bruce today.

Fonseca is interested in the job and was actually first approach by Newcastle’s new owners over the summer as they prepared for a takeover.

It’s added that Fonseca has the support of Amanda Staveley, though other Newcastle executives are pushing for other candidates.

Out of work after leaving Roma, Fonseca wouldn’t require compensation and has clearly been on the radar for some time.

Who is Newcastle target Paulo Fonseca?

Fonseca was born in Mozambique and started his managerial career with the likes of 1° de Dezembro, Odivelas, Pinhalnovense and Aves.

After shining at Pacos de Ferreira, Fonseca had a short-lived stint at Porto. Fonseca then returned to Pacos, but joined Braga in 2015.

Just a year later, Fonseca moved over to Ukraine with Shakhtar Donetsk. From 2011 to 2016, Fonseca held seven different managerial roles.

The 48-year-old did settle in Ukraine, winning three league titles in charge of Shakhtar. That earned him a big move to Roma in 2019, but he lasted just two years in the job.

An attack-minded coach who plays an exciting brand of football, Fonseca would be a far cry from Bruce, but there may be questions over whether Newcastle’s defenders are good enough to play in that style.
