Newcastle United haven’t even sacked Steve Bruce yet, but the expectation is that he will be moved on soon – and Paulo Fonseca appears to be a major contender.
Sunday’s 3-2 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur started so well, but ended with Newcastle clearly second best.
If Newcastle’s new owners want rid of Bruce, then now is the time to do it. As it stands, Newcastle was sleepwalking through games, wasting each fixture.
It sounds like Bruce will be gone soon, especially with interest in Fonseca seemingly gathering pace.
Newcastle’s interest in Fonseca
Fonseca has been on PIF’s radar for a long time.
The Daily Mail noted over the summer that Fonseca was a frontrunner for the Newcastle job had a Saudi takeover been completed in 2020.
ESPN claim that Fonseca is being strongly considered by Newcastle now, whilst 90Min suggest that Fonseca is one of three final candidates for the job.
A three-time title winner at Shakhtar Donetsk, Fonseca has nine trophies to his name as a coach.
PIF have wanted Fonseca for a while, and it now looks like they can finally land the manager they wanted all along.

Fonseca may want Tottenham revenge
You could hardly blame Fonseca for being desperate to make a move to the Premier League.
Over the summer, Fonseca had a deal agreed to become Tottenham Hotspur manager.
His account of things is that a two-year deal was done, but he told The Telegraph that Fabio Paratici scrapped the move.
Tottenham wanted more defensive football, and went with Nuno Espirito Santo instead.
Fonseca may now jump at the chance to not only show that he can be a success in the Premier League, but also strengthen Newcastle defensively too.
His attacking style is the main attraction, but Fonseca’s desire to prove Tottenham wrong could make him appealing for a first Premier League job.
