Newcastle United are interested in making Paul Mitchell their new sporting director as he joins a list of other high-profile candidates.
That’s according to the Daily Mail, who claim that Newcastle’s new owners are working through a number of potential candidates.
All the focus is on a replacement for Steve Bruce following his exit as Newcastle manager, but the Magpies also want to bring in a sporting director.
Mitchell is now thought to be another name on the list for Newcastle, but there are many candidates for the job.
Luis Campos, Jason Wilcox, Marc Overmars and Kevin Thelwell are also targeted by Newcastle, with an appointment wanted in the near future.
Who is Newcastle target Paul Mitchell?
Mitchell turned out for the likes of Wigan Athletic, Halifax Town, Swindon Town, MK Dons, Wrexham and Barnet in his playing career.
Mitchell then turned his hand to the recruitment side of the game, becoming MK Dons’ head of recruitment. His impressive work there landed him a move to Southampton in 2012, and then on to Tottenham in 2014.

He is understood to have played a key role in Tottenham signing Son Heung-min in 2015, having also wanted him at Southampton.
Mitchell left Tottenham in 2018 for a move to RB Leipzig, but left in the summer of 2020 to become Monaco’s sporting director.
Monaco have signed the likes of Axel Disasi, Caio Henrique, Ismail Jakobs, Krepin Diatta and Myron Boadu under Mitchell.
Mitchell has focused on signing young players with Monaco, and Newcastle’s new owners seemingly want him to do the same at St James’ Park.
