West Bromwich Albion and Southampton are keen to rescue Aleksandar Mitrovic from Premier League strugglers Newcastle United in the January window.
Aleksandar Mitrovic appears to have ran out of patience at Newcastle United.
The Serbian striker was the club’s first choice centre-forward until Rafael Benitez took over in the spring of 2016 but has barely featured in the year-and-a-half since. With Joselu and Dwight Gayle ahead of him in the pecking order, Mitrovic has played just 89 minutes of Premier League football tis season – spread out across six substitute appearences.
And the former Anderlecht prospect, who is understood to have been made available for about £12 million according to The Mirror, is only too willing to depart St James’ Park in the January transfer window.
“I persistently waited for the chance of the past months. I’m sorry after all, I loved Newcastle, but it’s time for me to look more at myself, to find the best solution for my career,” Mitrovic told Serbian website Zurnal.
“I never felt better, I’m physically in flawless form, I cannot wait to play. The most important thing is to find a club and finally get a chance in the field.”
If Mitrovic wants to stay in England, however, he may not be short of offers. The Guardian reported in November that goal-shy Southampton, who have recently lost Charlie Austin to a three-game ban, are interested while West Brom have also been linked of late.
The Mail reported last week that Baggies boss Alan Pardew is keen to raid his former club for Mitrovic with only Swansea City scoring fewer goals in the Premier League this season than his 19th placed side.
Mitrovic, who netted 11 goals in his debut Premier League season in 2015/16, would surely offer more in attack than the ineffective Hal Robson-Kanu and the erratic Salomon Rondon.
With Newcastle keen to sell and Mitrovic eyeing the exit, it appears West Brom could be handed a goalscorer on a plate.
