Both Newcastle United and Aston Villa got relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2015-16 campaign and are playing in the Championship this season.

Newcastle and Villa are two of the biggest clubs in England and have a loyal following. The atmosphere at St. James’ Park and Villa Park can be electric.

The Magpies and the Villans faced each other in the Championship earlier this week. The duo locked horns with each other at St. James’ Park on Monday evening.

As expected, Newcastle won the match 2-0. Yoan Gouffran put the Magpies in the lead in the 42nd minute, and Henri Lansbury scored an own goal just before the hour mark.

Ahead of the game, former Leicester City and Arsenal striker Alan Smith gave his opinion on who the bigger club is between Newcastle and Villa.

“As a boyhood Villa fan, you have got to say the mighty Villa, haven’t you?” Smith said on the Sky Sports Now show on Sky Sports News HQ on Monday morning (broadcast from 10, February 20, 2017) when asked who the bigger club is – Newcastle or Villa.

“They are two huge clubs. Newcastle get 55,000 every home game, magnificent stadium, but in terms of history Villa win it easily, with trophies won, you know, European Champions League champions, won the FA Cup, it has been a long, long time since Newcastle have won anything, so I have to go with Aston Villa.”

Newcastle are at the top of the Championship table at the moment with 69 points from 32 matches, just a point above second-placed Brighton & Hove Albion.

Meanwhile, Villa currently find themselves 17th in the standings with 36 points from 32 matches, only six points above the relegation zone.
