Newcastle United are showing an interest in signing Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners after learning of Sandro Tonali’s suspension.
Teun Koopmeiners is emerging as a target for Newcastle United ahead of the January transfer window.
That is according to a report from Tuttomercatoweb, as they suggest that the Atalanta star is a wanted man.
Newcastle paid big money over the summer as they secured the signing of Sandro Tonali from AC Milan.
However, the Italian now faces 10 months out of the game due to gambling breaches, leaving Newcastle to consider another midfield signing.
Newcastle United interested in Teun Koopmeiners
Tuttomercatoweb now suggest that Newcastle are eyeing Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners.
It’s stated that Newcastle scouted Koopmeiners last week, ahead of a potential January move.
The report claims that Newcastle would ideally want to sign a midfielder on loan, possibly with an option to buy.
Al Hilal midfielder Ruben Neves is a key target but Newcastle have been having a look at Koopmeiners too.
The problem is that Atalanta want fairly big money for the Dutchman with up to €55million (£47.5million) being demanded.
Newcastle seem unlikely to pay that kind of money and may try to tempt Atalanta with a loan-to-buy deal in January.
Liverpool have eyed Koopmeiners too
Hailed as ‘an extraordinary footballer’ by former Atalanta ace Domenico Progna in 2022, Koopmeiners has attracted plenty of interest.
Tutto Atalanta over in Italy reported back in January of this year that Liverpool had contacted Koopmeiners’ representatives.
The rumours continued towards the summer as Corriere dello Sport reported in May that Liverpool had made a move for the Dutchman.
Liverpool ended up signing four other midfielders, meaning a January move for Koopmeiners may not be in their plans.
That could leave the door open for Newcastle to strike, but it will all come down to Newcastle managing their budget and trying to tempt Atalanta.
