Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez had made Tom Cairney his top target in January.

Newcastle United must be regretting not pushing harder for Tom Cairney in January, when they had a chance now.
At the time the Cottagers’ looked far from certain to earn promotion, and Newcastle were hopeful that a deal could be done.

However, the Magpies failed to sign the central midfielder – and their chances of landing him are finished now.
Fulham went on to earn promotion, and Cairney is now set to pen a new long-term contract at Craven Cottage, as reported by The Times.

Rafael Benitez is no stranger to missing out on his targets at Newcastle, but not signing Cairney could be particularly frustrating, if the Fulham man goes on to make an impact at the top level this season.
Cairney was one of the stars of the Championship last term, and could have been a great addition to Benitez’s squad at St. James’ Park, if they had pushed harder for a deal while they still stood a chance.
