Newcastle United were interested in signing Ruben Loftus-Cheek, but he picked Crystal Palace instead.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek could have been a wonderful signing for Newcastle United, if he didn’t opt to move to Crystal Palace instead.

The Shields Gazette reported how Loftus-Cheek turned down Newcastle in favour of a move to Palace last summer, as he felt more settled in London.

And Rafael Benitez must be frustrated seeing Loftus-Cheek thriving at Selhurst Park.

Newcastle have had some problems at number 10 this season, with Ayoze Perez regularly being used as a shadow striker, but failing to catch the eye.

Loftus-Cheek could have performed that role perfectly, and his displays at Palace prove just how exciting a talent he is.

The Eagles may be badly struggling, but Loftus-Cheek looks to be a real star in their team.

The 21-year-old’s progress has even been recognised by England today, with Gareth Southgate calling the prospect up to the senior squad for the first time.

And Benitez must be looking back with some frustration, as if he could have persuaded Loftus-Cheek to move to Tyneside, Newcastle would’ve been a stronger team for it.
