A report last weekend claimed Newcastle United are monitoring Hull City ace Harry Maguire.

The Sunday People (26/02 page 49), reported Newcastle are tracking the centre-back, and it is a move they should strongly consider.

Newcastle have raided Hull already in the past 12 months already, moving for Mo Diame, and beating them to last season’s loanee Isaac Hayden.

If Newcastle could get Maguire, it would be a huge statement, considering the calibre of teams also interested in his services.

The Sun reported West Ham are keen on signing Maguire, with The Star claiming last week that Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race.

By time the summer transfer window rolls around Newcastle should have sealed their promotion to the Premier League, currently sitting at the top of the Championship.

Hull City are in 19th place in the Premier League and it will be easier for Newcastle to sign Magure if they are relegated, but even if they remain in the top flight, Maguire’s contract which expires in June 2018 makes him primed for a summer transfer.

Maguire could add further competition for Ciaran Clark for a place in Newcastle’s XI alongside Jamaal Lascelles, and has gained vital Premier League experience over the past 12 months.

The 23-year-old could be a cornerstone of Newcastle’s future and they would be smart to prioritise him this summer.
