Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff has suggested that he wanted to go out on loan at the start of the season, but was denied his chance, through his comments in the Northern Echo.

Longstaff has just signed a new contract at Newcastle, after impressing Rafael Benitez, but he has been starved of first-team chances this season.

Longstaff was kept around at St. James’ Park after an impressive pre-season, but his only competitive football has come in the Checkatrade Trophy.

And the youngster has suggested that a loan move would have appealed to him at the start of the campaign.

“It’s been a good competition for us young lads,” Longstaff said of the Checkatrade Trophy.

“I didn’t get the chance to go out on loan at the start of the year, so it’s given me a chance to play competitive matches.”

Whether Longstaff will get more first-team chances now he has signed a new deal remains to be seen.

The youngster was into the final year of his contract, but he is highly regarded at Newcastle.

Longstaff could also move out on loan in the January transfer window, if Benitez deems that best for his development.

Plenty of clubs have taken an interest in Longstaff, with the midfielder previously impressing on a loan spell with Blackpool last season.
