Newcastle United are said to be considering making a move for Swansea City’s Alfie Mawson.
Alfie Mawson may have just become a realistic target for Newcastle United, after the Guardian have reported that his asking price has been cut in half by Swansea City.
The Swans were demanding £40 million for Mawson in January, according to The Sun, with Carlos Carvalhal determined not to lose the centre-back.
However, Swansea’s relegation, combined with Mawson’s failure to make the England squad for the World Cup, has seen his valuation drop significantly.
And that could play right into Newcastle’s hands, as Rafael Benitez considers a swoop for the centre back.
The Chronicle reported how Benitez would like to bring Mawson to Newcastle in the summer, but he had fears the deal would be impossible.
At £40 million, Mawson would have been well out of Newcastle’s price range, but at half that valuation he may well be within budget for the Magpies.
Benitez is demanding funds at Newcastle, and if Mike Ashley does provide him with a significant amount of money in the summer, then Mawson could well have become a realistic target for the Magpies now.
