Newcastle United ended up signing Mikel Merino from Borussia Dortmund.

Roma midfielder Maxime Gonalons’ agent has confirmed Newcastle United’s interest in his client during the summer transfer window to Radio Kiss Kiss (09/10/2017) this week. However, it seems that Newcastle made the right choice by going for Mikel Merino over the Frenchman.
Gonalons would have been an eye catching addition for Newcastle to make, but Merino looks to be the pick of the North East side’s signings over the summer.

Merino has made a brilliant start at Newcastle, with the Spaniard bossing games from his central midfield spot.
Merino is only on loan at Newcastle from Borussia Dortmund, but Rafael Benitez’s side have shown great foresight with the transfer.

Newcastle have agreed a price for Merino with Dortmund already, meaning they could get a bargain next summer.
And, considering Gonalons would’ve cost a sizeable amount, it seems that Benitez’s side definitely got the better deal by going for Merino instead.
