Newcastle United were keen to sign Sunderland’s Josh Maja in the summer, according to reports.

Josh Maja of Sunderland warms up ahead of the Sky Bet Championship match between QPR and Sunderland at Loftus Road on March 10, 2018 in London, England.

Newcastle United must be disappointed that they didn’t force through a move for Josh Maja in the summer, after his blistering start with Sunderland this term.

The Daily Mail claimed that Newcastle were plotting to raid their rivals for Maja when they were relegated into League One.

However, Rafael Benitez’s side did not force through a deal, and that may end up being an error.

Maja has started this term brilliantly at Sunderland, and he has shot his way to the top of the League One scoring charts.

The Sunderland forward has fired nine goals already this term, with Premier League sides now taking attention of his form.

Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Southampton are all after Maja, according to the Daily Mirror, and Newcastle may well be viewing him as one who got away now.

Newcastle have struggled going forward this term, but Maja could have offered them pace, mobility and a clinical finish.

And, at the age of 19, the Sunderland forward looks to have an extremely bright future ahead of him now.
