Newcastle United fancy Maxi Gomez but it currently looks like the Valencia striker is more likely to join Fenerbahce this summer.

The Magpies are in the market for attacking options but they have suffered frustration in that regard.

Targets like Moussa Diaby, Jack Harrison and Alexander Isak have been a little too expensive whilst Hugo Ekitike picked a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

There is still time for Newcastle to land the attacking additions they want and a La Liga striker is now being linked with a move to St James’ Park.

Newcastle United fancy Maxi Gomez

Turkish outlet Aksam reported on Monday that Newcastle are fighting with Fenerbahce for the signing of Valencia striker Maxi Gomez.

It was suggested that Fenerbahce had agreed a £40,000-a-week deal to sign Gomez, but there is no agreement with Valencia as things stand.

Newcastle have now allegedly moved in and asked about Gomez with Fenerbahce unwilling to pay a €12million (£10million) transfer fee.

It’s just hard to see Newcastle going for Gomez, never mind him actually rejecting the Magpies, and it feels like agent work or an attempt to make Fenerbahce’s move seem more impressive.

Gomez, 25, was a major talent at Celta Vigo with 30 goals in 75 games, securing himself a move to Valencia.

The goals haven’t flowed the same though. 10 goals in his first season was followed by seven in the second and then just five last season.

Gomez’s goal tally has been going down in recent years and that doesn’t really smack of a player Newcastle would be interested in signing.

The Uruguayan is big, physical and seemingly available for a relatively low fee this summer, but we can’t see Newcastle making a firm push for Gomez’s signature as they aim a little higher.
