Newcastle United’s hopes of signing Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter have been boosted after he announced his imminent exit.

Since Newcastle’s takeover in October, it may be easier to list the players who haven’t been linked with moves to Tyneside.

One of the players linked is German defender Ginter, with The Daily Mail reporting earlier this month that he has been discussed inside Newcastle.

Ginter, 27, has racked up more than 150 appearances for Gladbach since joining from Borussia Dormtund in 2017.

Once a top young talent at Freiburg, Ginter lost his way at Dortmund and needed that move to Gladbach to get back on track.

Strong and a great reader of the game, Ginter has more than 40 Germany caps to his name and is about to become very in-demand.

Ginter’s contract is up at the end of the season, and he has admitted that he has decided to leave Gladbach.

Ginter has admitted that the ‘decision has been made’, with the intention of leaving Gladbach next summer.

Ginter may not be eyeing a January transfer, but this is where Newcastle may have to swoop in.

Newcastle may be one of the few clubs willing to spend considerable cash to get Ginter in now rather than in the summer.

If it gets to the end of the season, major clubs may be looking to sign Ginter for free – and Newcastle could miss their chance.
