Newcastle United are now on the verge of signing Aston Villa left back Matt Targett, with a medical being done on deadline day.

Newcastle have plenty going on in the final hours of the transfer window, with the likes of Dan Burn and Dean Henderson wanted.

The first incoming of the day appears to be defender Targett, with the Villa ace now on the brink of joining Newcastle.

Eddie Howe has been keen to bring in a new left back this month and a window of opportunity opened to them over Targett.

Villa splashed the cash on a new left back earlier this month by luring Lucas Digne from Everton in a big move.

Targett was relegated to second choice after that move, and Newcastle are now offering a route to first-team playing time once again.

Sky Sports have now posted a video showing Targett arriving at Newcastle for his medical, with a deal now imminent.

Sky Sports have added that there is still a hurdle to be cleared because it’s undecided whether Newcastle will have an option to buy Targett.

At the moment, Targett is just joining Newcastle on loan for the rest of the season but the Magpies seemingly want an option to buy this summer.

The 26-year-old could be Newcastle’s long-term solution at left back, but talks continue over whether that will be possible.

This is a rapid turn of events for Targett, who has gone from starting regularly to being on the chopping block since Steven Gerrard’s arrival.

Less than a year ago, then-Villa boss Dean Smith was backing Targett for an England call-up with Gareth Southgate watching his progress.

Targett didn’t receive that call-up and certainly won’t be in contention if he isn’t playing, hence this move to Newcastle.

Targett will be looking to shine with the Magpies and get back onto Southgate’s radar, with Eddie Howe no doubt a huge fan of this move.
