Magpies forward Ayoze Perez spoke to the Shields Gazette about his dramatic mid-week winner against title rivals Brighton & Hove Albion, and shared the message that Rafa Benitez gave him before he entered the fray with just 10 minutes remaining.
Newcastle are now sitting back at the top of the Championship table, with a two point advantage over the Seagulls, and face another tough away trip tomorrow when they head to Yorkshire to take on in-form Huddersfield Town.
And three points against David Wagner’s men would put the Tyneside outfit in an extremely strong position in their quest for promotion back to the promised land.
Perez, 23, has scored nine goals for the Magpies this season, despite limited starting opportunities.
And the Spaniard spoke to the Shields Gazette about the most important goal he has scored during his time at St James’ Park, sharing the message his manager gave him before he came on as a substitute at the Amex Stadium:

“He told me to tell the players to stay calm, that it was 1-1 and we could win it if we stay calm, keep our heads and focus. And we did win it. “It was a massive win for us, an important goal at the end.”
After Perez’ goal against Brighton, he will now be looking for more regular first-team action, and Benitez will surely find it hard not to include him in the side for their clash against the Terriers tomorrow.
