Newcastle United no longer seem confident of bringing Ajax man Marc Overmars in as their new director of football despite alleged talks.

The Times claim that one Newcastle source has told them over the weekend that Overmars will not be getting the job.

It seems unlikely that Newcastle would back away from Overmars, so maybe the Dutchman has decided he’s better off staying at Ajax.

This comes after The Mirror reported last week that talks had been opened with Overmars.

The Mirror added over the weekend that PIF were stepping up their interest in Overmars, but looks set to fall on deaf ears.

Ralf Rangnick, Paul Mitchell and Luis Campos are the other names mentioned as Newcastle targets for the director of football role.

Overmars would have been Newcastle coup

Former Arsenal winger Overmars was lightning quick in his playing days, but a little more measured as a director of football.

The 48-year-old has held this post since 2012 and has raked in around £550million in player sales in that time.

Overmars has earned a reputation as one of the top sporting directors in Europe, with Ajax also making shrewd signings.

Antony and Mohammed Kudus are two of the more recent recruits who look set to earn Ajax big money in the future.

Newcastle need to get better at trading; big sales have been hard to come by in recent times.

Overmars could have brought that, but it sounds like PIF won’t be able to get him to Newcastle after all.
