Newcastle United have made contact to try and sign Scott McTominay but Manchester United just aren’t interested in a deal.

That’s according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, who has been speaking to Give Me Sport.

Downie claims that Newcastle recently made an enquiry into signing McTominay, possibly on loan.

However, Manchester United weren’t interested and it looks unlikely that McTominay will be heading to St James’ Park this month.

The Times reported back in June that Newcastle had made contact to try and sign McTominay and seemingly tried their luck again.

It’s a similar outcome again though with Manchester United keen to keep hold of McTominay rather than sanction a move to Tyneside.

You could hardly blame Scott McTominay for fancying Newcastle move

It seems clear that Newcastle want to add a number six – a holding midfielder – to their ranks.

There have been links to the likes of Manu Kone and Khephren Thuram of late and McTominay would fit the bill.

The Scotland international is a huge presence physically and the repeated interest suggests Eddie Howe sees real quality in McTominay.

There will of course be an emotional pull for McTominay at Old Trafford, having been with the club since the age of just five.

McTominay has made his way up through the United ranks and has now made close to 200 first-team appearances for the Red Devils.

Leaving won’t be easy for McTominay but having interest in a move to Newcastle would be natural.

McTominay hasn’t started a Premier League game since the 6-3 hammering at Manchester City in October.

McTominay has played just 95 league minutes since that defeat and his only starts are now coming in cup competitions.

Now 26, McTominay may feel that he needs regular playing time; he isn’t a kid anymore, he is approaching the prime of his career and is stuck on the bench.

Casemiro has made the Manchester United midfield his own and McTominay is now on the fringes of the side.

Leaving to go and feature regularly for Newcastle, a team growing rapidly and with enormous plans for the future, will surely appeal.

Manchester United surely have little interest in strengthening a direct rival for the top four but it looks like Newcastle will keep asking about McTominay after targeting him in two straight windows.
