Newcastle United may have a chance to sign Scott McTominay this summer with Manchester United allegedly willing to sell.

That’s according to The Sunday Mirror (05/02, p79), who claim that Erik ten Hag is ready to wield the axe at Old Trafford.

As the Dutchman attempts to gradually shape the United squad, a number of players are likely to be offloaded moving forward.

It’s stated that Ten Hag fancies shifting out McTominay, Harry Maguire, Anthony Martial, Alex Telles, Eric Bailly and Donny van de Beek.

Bailly and Telles are already out on loan, with the others seemingly just not part of Ten Hag’s plans for the coming years.

United need to offload players in order to bring in cash for new signings, with those players bound to attract some interest.

Newcastle United surely ready to move for Scott McTominay

If McTominay does become available, Newcastle United will surely be at the front of the queue for his signature.

The Athletic claimed in January that Newcastle had held conversations over a potential move for McTominay.

However, United weren’t willing to sell due to concerns over their depth in midfield.

Christian Eriksen then got injured, prompting a late loan deal for Marcel Sabitzer, before Casemiro ’s red card against Crystal Palace.

United’s midfield ranks are in flux right now but with plans to make signings in the summer, McTominay could become available.

According to The Telegraph, McTominay was one to joining Newcastle in January with the midfielder no doubt desperate to play regular first-team football.

The Athletic add that Eddie Howe is a big fan of McTominay’s ball-carrying ability in midfield, so a summer move makes perfect sense.

Newcastle will be watching developments closely and may hope to finally land their man in the summer as United consider selling.
