Newcastle United will host Premier League title-chasing Liverpool next month.
Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has admitted that he ‘can’t win’ as his team prepares to face Premier League title chasers Liverpool next month.
The Magpies will host Jurgen Klopp’s side at St James’ Park on May 4th in what will be a crucial clash for the away team.
Benitez managed the Reds during the noughties and came very close to winning the title – Klopp finds himself in a similar situation.
Speaking to the Full-Time Phone In on talkSPORT (21/04/2019 at 8:15 pm), Benitez was asked about coming up against his former club in a few weeks time.
“That is a game that I can’t win,” Benitez admitted on talkSPORT. “If we win they will say ‘Oh, [he should be helping us]’ and if you lose ‘Oh, he was not giving everything’.
“I will not talk too much about this game until it comes around. I was in Liverpool winning trophies. Why? Because I was professional and I was fighting against anyone.
“Some people will criticise me because I was fighting against Manchester United. It’s my job to do the best for my team and I will try to do the best for my team [against Liverpool] that’s it.”
At this moment in time, Liverpool are sitting top of the Premier League table with a two-point lead over Manchester City, who have a game in hand.
By the time the Reds make the trip to the North East, the title race could have a completely different picture and if results go for Liverpool then they may even be in a position where a win would seal them that elusive Premier League crown.
As for Benitez’s side, he has masterminded his team to yet another season in England’s top-flight despite having such little to spend.
