Newcastle United have been linked with a surprise move for former Chelsea and Liverpool striker Fernando Torres.

The Mirror report Torres is keen on leaving Atletico Madrid for the second time in his career, and could link up with former boss Rafa Benitez once again.

Torres, 33, has struggled for game time at Atletico this season but does not see himself playing for another Spanish club, putting a Premier League return on his agenda.

The Mirror report he is eyeing a short-term loan, and this is perfect for Newcastle.

Newcastle are in the midst of talks concerning a potential takeover, which could spark a spending spree.

The Daily Star report a takeover could be agreed this week and Newcastle would get around £100 million to spend on players from their new owners.

You could question then why they might need a short term loan for Torres, but it is his high profile which would attract further players to the club.

Torres won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2012 and the Europa League under Benitez the following season.

More high profile was his involvement in Spain’s World Cup win in 2010 and European Championship successes in 2008 and 2012.

Torres being at Newcastle would help attract more top quality players to the club, who would see that a newly taken over Toon are trying create something special.

Even on a short term deal the veteran could have a major impact, and on a loan agreement there is little risk for a Newcastle side which has struggled for goals this season.
