Newcastle United youngster Sean Longstaff has shone on loan at Blackpool in League One – and has piqued the interest of one or two clubs.
For a city reared on a diet of football, the fact that the most recent locally-born youngster to become a regular in Newcastle United’s first-team is long-serving left-back Paul Dummett (above) remains a disappointment on Tyneside.
Yet, that could change sooner rather than later with North Shields-born 19-year-old Sean Longstaff earning rave reviews for his masterful performances on loan at League One Blackpool. The teenager has scored four often spectacular goals in eight league games for The Tangerines and looks to have everything required to make the step up from academy to first-team.
Longstaff is yet to make his senior bow for Newcastle but, if he carries on in the same vein, he will surely get his opportunity sooner rather than later. At least, that is the idea.
The Mail reports that Longstaff’s excellent performances have not just caught the eye of parent club Newcastle – there are a number of Premier League clubs who have been impressed by the 6ft 2ins midfielder’s matchwinning performances and, while he only signed a long-term contract in the summer, Newcastle may have to fend off interest for one of their most exciting young players.
And, needless to say, the prospect of losing Longstaff at such an early age does not bare thinking about for The Magpies’ fans. A proud local following are crying out for ‘one of their own’ and Longstaff would be immensely popular if given the chance to shine.
However, losing him to a Premier League rival would mean that Newcastle would be forced to wait even longer for a player born and reared on Tyneside to make a mark at his boyhood club.
