Newcastle United sold Ivan Toney and current Magpies ace Kieran Trippier has now moved to hail the Brentford striker.

Every club has those players that they just seemed to let go too early.

For instance, Arsenal will wonder what could have been with Serge Gnabry and you could understand Newcastle feeling that kind of way about two Premier League strikers.

Aleksandar Mitrovic is on fire at Fulham having failed to really live up to his billing at Newcastle.

Also down in West London is Ivan Toney – a man Newcastle sold without really giving him a proper chance.

Snapped up from Northampton Town back in 2015, Newcastle saw real potential in Toney after 13 goals in 60 games for the Cobblers.

Loans to Barnsley, Shrewsbury Town, Scunthorpe United and Wigan Athletic followed for Toney, who only ever appeared twice in the Premier League for Newcastle.

The Magpies decided to sell up in the summer of 2018, allowing Toney to join Peterborough United for just £650,000.

Toney immediately set about making a mockery of that price tag, racking up 49 goals in 94 games for the Posh.

Brentford swooped to sign Toney in 2020 and the goals have continued to flow, racking up 52 goals in 97 outings.

Toney is now one of the top Premier League strikers and his form has seen him earn a first call-up to the England squad.

Toney could feature against Germany tonight and that would mean rubbing shoulders with current Newcastle star Kieran Trippier.

Oh how Newcastle fans would surely love to see Toney on the end of Trippier’s crosses in black and white stripes.

They will have to make do with England action though and Trippier has already outlined his admiration for the former Magpies ace.

As quoted by the Shields Gazette, Trippier admitted that he was ‘excited’ to start training with Toney and Newcastle fans could see them in action together tonight.

This will give a flavour of Newcastle past and present, and who knows – maybe they could join each other in the Newcastle side one day given that the Magpies were keen on re-signing Toney over the summer.
