Alan Shearer has hailed Kieran Trippier after Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup win over Tranmere Rovers on Wednesday night.

The Magpies headed to Prenton Park to take on the League Two side, no doubt desperate to avoid a cup upset.

Tranmere were given real hope of a giant-killing though as Elliott Nevitt fired the hosts into the lead from a sweeping passing move.

Newcastle had to fight back and they did, claiming a 2-1 win thanks to goals from Jamaal Lascelles and Chris Wood, sending the Magpies through.

Eddie Howe’s men will take on Crystal Palace in the next round and must be glad to have avoided embarrassment in Birkenhead.

Alan Shearer has hailed Kieran Trippier

Newcastle’s two goals came from Kieran Trippier deliveries.

The England international came on for the injured Emil Krafth in the first half and once again made a huge impact.

Trippier sent a corner in for Lascelles, and whilst his initial header was saved, he scored on the rebound.

Trippier then added a direct assist, sending in another corner for Wood to plant a header into the back of the net.

We should probably get used to seeing this; Trippier is such a threat from set pieces that Newcastle should rack up goals through the former Atletico Madrid ace.

Even on Sunday afternoon, we saw Trippier smash a stunning free kick into the top corner against Manchester City.

Whether it’s goals or assists, Trippier is proving to be a major weapon for Newcastle – and he is impressing Alan Shearer in the process.

Newcastle legend Shearer took to Twitter to react to Trippier’s display at Tranmere, simply stating ‘he’s very, very good’.

That verdict is one that many Newcastle fans will share with Shearer, and fans will be excited to see more of Trippier over the course of the season.
