Newcastle United want Jorginho and Chelsea seem ready to let him leave as they look to work with a younger squad.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who claim that Newcastle are looking to sign Jorginho in January.

The Italian midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season and Newcastle are positioning themselves for a deal.

That could come at the end of the season, or Newcastle could look to engineer a cash deal in the upcoming transfer window.

Chelsea seemingly don’t have plans to offer Jorginho another contract and are happy for him to leave Stamford Bridge.

The reason is that Chelsea want to build a much youngster squad moving forward so experienced players like Jorginho could be offloaded.

Moves for the likes of Andrey Santos and Benot Badiashile proved that plan and Jorginho could be one to make way.

Why Newcastle interest in Jorginho does and doesn’t make sense

This is one rumour that will probably split opinion.

Jorginho predominantly plays as a sitting midfielder, attempting to dictate play from deep.

The 31-year-old cost Chelsea around £57million back in 2018 and has turned out more than 200 times for the Blues.

Newcastle have shown a willingness to sign proven Premier League players since their big takeover, landing the likes of Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.

Jorginho would fit into that category too but this still feels like a dubious rumour.

The Magpies have been linked with other midfielders like Moises Caicedo and Andrey Santos.

They suit the Newcastle profile a little better, as they’re young, talented midfielders who have huge futures ahead of him.

Santos may now be heading to Chelsea but it would be a surprise to see Newcastle completely pivot away to signing a player in his 30’s like Jorginho.

Maybe Newcastle think this is a bargain too good to pass up, but we would be surprised if Jorginho ends up at St James’ Park.
