Newcastle United are searching for a new midfield signing with Jonjo Shelvey expected to undergo a medical at Nottingham Forest today.

That’s according to Sky Sports, who claim that Forest now have an agreement in place to sign Shelvey.

It’s stated that Shelvey has been undergoing a medical at Forest this morning ahead of completing his move.

This one seemed to come out of absolutely nowhere with Forest moving fairly quietly to sign Shelvey ahead of the transfer deadline.

Shelvey had just a matter of months left on his Newcastle contract though and the Magpies have now decided to let him move on.

The report notes that Shelvey was ‘torn’ on whether to stay at Newcastle or head to Forest, but the financial security offered at the City Ground swung it.

Newcastle now chasing Jonjo Shelvey replacement

Sky Sports add that Newcastle are now trying to sign a midfielder to come in as Shelvey’s replacement at St James’ Park.

Shelvey has been effective in a holding role for many years and that will be the priority for Newcastle in the coming hours.

90Min’s Graeme Bailey reports that Newcastle want to sign Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge but are eyeing a loan deal.

Fulham are putting cash on the table for Berge, so a loan to Newcastle seems somewhat unlikely.

Ajax star Edson Alvarez has been heavily linked with Newcastle in recent times and is an ideal holding midfield player.

The Athletic note that Alvarez has been scouted but Eddie Howe wants a player with Premier League experience, so it’s a similar story with Khephren Thuram at Nice and Gladbach’s Manu Kone.

Newcastle really like Scott McTominay but have been told that Manchester United won’t let him go this month.

Signing a player with the Premier League experience Howe wants at such short notice feels a little unlikely, so Newcastle may need to move into the European market for a new signing.
