Newcastle United want Jonathan David and the Lille striker is set to play at the World Cup under boyhood Magpies fan John Herdman.

You can be absolutely sure that Newcastle will be looking at the World Cup for potential signings.

The Magpies will have the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier and Fabian Schar in action in Qatar whilst imminent arrival Garang Kuol has been called up by Australia.

Newcastle will be looking for potential additions and one player has something of a connection to the Magpies.

Newcastle United want Jonathan David

The Chronicle claimed last weekend that Newcastle are interested in signing Lille striker Jonathan David.

Newcastle are watching David and they will have surely been impressed this season.

David, 22, has hit nine goals and three assists in 14 games for Lille this season and is expected to move on in 2023.

Given that interest, Newcastle will likely have David in their sights at the World Cup – and his manager would surely love to see him in black and white stripes.

David’s coach with Canada with John Herdman, who was born in County Durham.

Herdman recently told the Daily Mail that he actually started out as a Manchester United fan because he loved midfielder Robson, who also hailed from the North East.

Herdman’s father supported Newcastle though and when Manchester United players ignored him at St James’ Park aged just 11, Herdman pivoted to support Newcastle.

Herdman has been a Newcastle fan ever since and he must have been happy when reading that the Magpies want one of his Canadian stars.

David likely won’t make his transfer decision based on what Herdman says, but who could blame the Canada boss for having a little word or two to his star striker about a move to Tyneside?

The pair are about to spend a lot of time together in Qatar so a few hints here and there would be appreciated by the Magpies!

An impressive World Cup could cement Newcastle’s interest and any move would likely have the backing of Herdman.
