Newcastle United showed an interest in Mainz defender Jeremiah St Juste in January – and there could be new interest this summer.
Sky Germany reported late in January that Newcastle were keen to sign St Juste before the transfer deadline.
Talks were opened over a £13million deal to sign St Juste but the deadline passed without the defender making the move to St James’ Park.
Fussball Transfers now claim that Newcastle did indeed ‘knock’ on Mainz’s door for St Juste in January.
They also added that Newcastle may also renew their interest in St Juste this summer, but they are far from alone in rating him highly.
The report notes that West Ham United and Leicester City are also keen on St Juste, as are Wolfsburg, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen.
Yet whilst the initial talks surrounding a £13million fee, this report now claims that the fee would be €12million (£10million).
The reason for the price tag dropping is that St Juste is out of contract in 2023 and Mainz know they will need to sell this summer.
St Juste, 25, showed promise with Heerenveen and Feyenoord and is now shining in the Bundesliga with Mainz.

St Juste hit the headlines last season, recording the fastest speed of any Bundesliga player – even faster than Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies!
A little undersized at 6ft tall, St Juste could be the ideal partner for the gigantic Dan Burn in the Newcastle defence.
Mixing Burn’s height, power and natural left-footed ability with a smaller, quicker, right-footed centre back in St Juste could be ideal for Newcastle.
West Ham and Leicester pose a major threat to Newcastle’s hopes, but having shown a January interest, the Magpies may be hoping it’s second time lucky.
