Newcastle United need to make at least three defensive signings in January in order to stay in the Premier League this season.
That’s according to pundit Jamie Carragher, who was speaking to Monday Night Football on Sky Sports last night.
Carragher highlighted some dreadful Newcastle defending from this season, claiming Newcastle have ‘really poor’ defenders.
The ex-Liverpool man added that Newcastle – fresh from their new takeover – must sign three or four defenders in January just to avoid relegation.
“They’ve got really poor defenders, and that’s a big problem for them, it really is,” said Carragher. “They are going to need three or four defenders in January to stay up – there is no doubt about that,” he added.
Newcastle may already have a signing in mind
Newcastle will likely have a new manager in place come January, and they may be able to change things.
It does though look like Newcastle’s new owners already have one defensive signing planned for January.

The Telegraph report that Burnley defender James Tarkowski is expected to be one of PIF’s first signings at Newcastle.
Branded a ‘top player’ by Burnley boss Sean Dyche, Tarkowski is exactly what Newcastle need.
Tarkowski is ready-made for the Premier League, he has been battle-hardened at Burnley and proven to be a great leader.
Newcastle need Tarkowski and much more in January, but this could be the type of signing Carragher wants to see.
