Newcastle United have considered a move to sign Southampton central defender Jan Bednarek before next week’s transfer deadline.
That’s according to a report from the Daily Mail, who claim that Bednarek is just one of the defenders Newcastle are considering signing.
You would probably be better off naming the defenders who haven’t been linked with Newcastle of late.
Bednarek is the latest, with Newcastle allegedly viewing him as a potential signing to bolster Eddie Howe’s back line.
Bednarek is contracted to Southampton until 2025, so prising him away from the Saints won’t be easy for Newcastle.
The 25-year-old joined Southampton for just £5million from Lech Poznan back in 2017 and has proven to be a solid contributor.
Hailed as a ‘firefighter’ by Ralph Hasenhuttl, Bednarek has now made more than 100 Premier League appearances for the Saints.
The Polish international’s form of late has been superb, bagging three goals in his last seven Premier League games having bagged against Leicester City, West Ham United and Brentford.
Newcastle would mostly want Bednarek for his defensive ability, but being a threat inside the opposition penalty area is always a boost.

There is still plenty of untapped potential with Bednarek, who may not be a big name but could improve Newcastle’s back line.
Fans may be a little mixed on Bednarek, but one man who may love such a move is Newcastle legend Alan Shearer.
Shearer praised Bednarek earlier this season, naming him in his team of the week back in September after shining against Manchester City.
Shearer branded Bednarek’s defending ‘heroic’ as he helped the Saints secure a point at the Etihad Stadium.
That’s the kind of defending Newcastle fans want to see, but a late move for Bednarek won’t be easy with Southampton no doubt reluctant to sell.
