Newcastle United want James Maddison and Leicester City are now anticipating a January bid from the Magpies.

Eddie Howe’s side continue to impress this season and have just landed a statement 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Goals from Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron fired Newcastle to victory in North London, proving that they can mix it with the so-called ‘big six’.

A top six finish is now a very real dream for Newcastle, who may be able to add some quality in January to help them secure European football.

Newcastle United want James Maddison

Newcastle’s midfield continues to shine but they don’t yet have a true number 10.

There have been links to Celtic playmaker Matt O’Riley but he appears to be a backup target behind James Maddison.

The Leicester City star was a key target for Newcastle over the summer but the Magpies had two bids rejected.

Leicester stood firm and kept arguably their best player, seemingly feeling that they couldn’t lose both him and Wesley Fofana.

Maddison remains on Newcastle’s wish list though and with European qualification now a realistic goal, a move may be even more appealing than in the summer.

The Sunday Mirror (23/10, p78) report that Leicester are now bracing for Newcastle to make a new move for Maddison in January.

The Foxes fear that big money will be on the table again with an offer from Newcastle now ‘anticipated’.

Maddison has just over 18 months left on his contract and Leicester want him to sign a new one.

Yet with Newcastle now expected to push again for the playmaker in January, Maddison may be left with a tricky decision.

Maddison, 25, hasn’t let any of this distract him this season, bagging six goals and two assists in 10 Premier League outings.

That kind of impact could take Newcastle to a whole new level and few could blame Maddison if he wanted to be part of this Newcastle project after seeing their results this term.

Hailed as ‘phenomenal’ by former teammate Jack Stephens, Maddison is an outstanding talent and really deserves an England call-up ahead of the World Cup.
