Newcastle United have had a long-standing interest in Everton midfielder James McCarthy.
According to a report in the Telegraph, Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez still has an interest in Everton midfielder James McCarthy.
Newcastle attempted to sign McCarthy in the January transfer window, but their bid failed.
Everton decided to keep hold of the Republic of Ireland international, but he appears to have frustrated Ronald Koeman since.
Koeman has publicly criticised McCarthy for playing for Ireland, and aggravating an injury problem.
Everton could now offload the central midfielder, and Newcastle are keen to bring him to St. James’ Park.
The Magpies also have other names on their wishlist, with Benitez keen to strengthen in all areas.
Newcastle are believed to be interested in Arsenal’s Calum Chambers, and Fulham’s Tom Cairney – with Benitez hoping he has a sizeable amount of funds to spend.
