Newcastle United may have been frustrated when they missed out on Daniel Sturridge and Eliaqum Mangala in January, but it seems that they have actually made a lucky escape.
Newcastle went for both Sturridge and Mangala last month, as reported by the Chronicle, as Rafael Benitez felt that the pair could improve the quality of his squad.
Newcastle missed out on the double-swoop, which was a disappointment at the time, but Sturridge’s and Mangala’s injury problems mean that they would have pointless additions anyway.
Sturridge has failed to stay fit at West Bromwich Albion, and is now looking at spending a few weeks on the sidelines.
By that time, West Brom could really be cut adrift, with time running out for them to save themselves.
Mangala, meanwhile, is set to be out for the rest of the season after playing just two games for Everton.
The Manchester City man had struggled over his first two appearances for the Toffees, and it seems that his chances of impressing at Everton are already over.
Newcastle ended up moving for Kenedy, Martin Dubravka and Islam Slimani in January – and their impact has already been noticeable.
Slimani may not have featured yet, but both Kenedy and Dubravka have impressed for the Magpies.
And Newcastle appear to have done the best business in January, which could be crucial in their bid for survival.
