Newcastle United nearly completed a deal to sign Lucas Perez from Arsenal during the summer transfer window.

Newcastle United were heavily linked with Lucas Perez in the summer transfer window, but it seems that Rafael Benitez was correct not push through with bidding for the Arsenal striker.
At the time, some supporters expressed frustration about Newcastle’s failure to land the forward.

However, his struggles since moving to Deportivo suggests that Newcastle were right not to move for the forward.
Perez has scored just two goal in his first seven appearances in La Liga, with his displays failing to catch the eye in La Liga.
In the end Newcastle went Joselu instead, and he has managed to match Perez’s tally.

Critically though, Joselu only cost Newcastle £5 million (Daily Mail), which was half of Perez’s asking price.
And although Joselu may not be the long-term solution to Newcastle’s striking problems, he certainly seems to have been a better choice than Perez.
