Newcastle United have shown an interest in signing Genk star Gerardo Artetaga as they desperately look to bring in a left back before Monday’s deadline.

That’s according to 90Min, who claim that Newcastle are focusing on Sassuolo star Rogerio as their prime left back target.

Yet having seen other targets – such as Mitchel Bakker and Robin Gosens – fall by the wayside, Newcastle are of course having to identify alternative targets.

One of the backup targets behind Rogerio appears to be Arteaga, who may not be a familiar name to many fans in England.

Arteaga, 23, excelled in his native Mexico with Santos Laguna, rising through the ranks before racking up 108 appearances.

After just one goal and four assists for Santos Laguna, Arteaga’s attacking output has been much better with Genk.

Signed by the Belgian side in 2020, Arteaga now has three goals and eight assists in 58 games. This season, the Mexican ace has four assists already.

Pacey with quick feet, Arteaga has quality on the ball and looks to drive forward when he can – attributes Newcastle would love to see.

Het Laatste Nieuws even compared Arteaga to Roberto Carlos – the dream for any left back, with Arteaga believing the Brazilian is the best left back ever.

Given his age, Arteaga could be a real star of the future and an under-the-radar signing for Newcastle in the final days of the window.

Not many people will focusing on the Mexican ace before the deadline, which may just allow Newcastle to swoop in.

Newcastle have already signed one of Arteaga’s former teammates in Santiago Munoz, so maybe they fancy reuniting the duo.

Much will depend on how the move for Rogerio goes in the coming days, but keep an eye on Arteaga for a big move to Newcastle too.
