Mikel Merino did a facepalm after the third goal Newcastle United conceded – a Panenka from Eden Hazard.
Newcastle United lost 3-1 away to Chelsea on Saturday afternoon.
Bizarrely, the Magpies took an early 1-0 lead when Dwight Gayle tapped into an empty net after good work from Jacob Murphy, but the Premier League champions levelled up on 21 minutes through Eden Hazard.
Newcastle trailed 2-1 at the break after Alvaro Morata headed from close range, getting beyond a suspect Chancel Mbemba to do so, before Hazard sealed the points in the final quarter of the match with a cheeky panenka from the penalty spot.
It was a spirited effort from Rafael Benitez’s side, and especially from Murphy, but it was their fifth Premier League defeat in six games and a big Christmas period is needed to stave off the threat of relegation during the second half of the campaign.
