Newcastle United believe that they could offer Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe the Premier League football he wants next season.
Newcastle United fans have urged Rafael Benitez to make a move for Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe in the summer.
With Newcastle and Sunderland looking likely to swap divisions next term, supporters of the Tyneside club believe there is a possibility that they could rob their rivals of their star striker.
Defoe admitted yesterday that if Sunderland are relegated, he could look to move on to try and prolong his England career.
The veteran forward has been called up to the latest Three Lions’ squad, and wants to keep his place.
He said (Chronicle): “Obviously you have to be realistic and to get into any squad it is based on merit and you need to be playing at the top level.
“When I went to Toronto I missed out on going to the World Cup and it was a hard call to take. I would say I probably need to be playing in the Premier League but we will see what happens.”
And with Newcastle currently leading the way in the Championship, and looking set to be promoted, Magpies supporters believe a deal could be done.
There is, of course, no guarantee that Defoe would be willing to move to Newcastle or whether Sunderland would sanction a deal.
The last player to switch between the two sides was Jack Colback, who left the Stadium of Light to move to St. James’ Park back in 2014.
Defoe has scored 14 goals in the Premier League for Sunderland so far this season.
