Newcastle United have managed to get a deal for Steve Bruce wrapped up today.

Newcastle United fans have been left stunned by Matt Ritchie’s comments to Sky Sports about Steve Bruce’s appointment.

Sky Sports were covering Newcastle’s Asia Trophy match against Wolverhampton Wanderers today, and Ritchie was asked before the game about Bruce’s appointment.

The managerial choice has not gone down well with the St. James’ Park crowd, who feel that Bruce is a major downgrade on Rafael Benitez.

However, Ritchie has suggested that he thinks Newcastle could be in for an ‘exciting season’.

“Bruce has been in the game for a long time and played and managed at a high level so I’m sure he’ll be fantastic for the club. A really exciting season is in prospect,” Ritchie said.

In fairness to Ritchie, he surely couldn’t have slated his new boss in his first interview.

But Newcastle fans think that his positive comments do miss the mark with the way that supporters are feeling.

Ritchie needs to impress Bruce, as his future at Newcastle is up in the air, after the Daily Mirror suggested he was available for £10 million.

Ritchie’s current deal at Newcastle expires in 2021, but he has told the Chronicle that he wants a new deal, as he is desperate to stay.
