Newcastle United fans have been left feeling uneasy by Paul Merson’s prediction they will win this weekend.

Merson notes in his SkySports column that he has not tipped Newcastle to win a single game yet this campaign in nine attempts, until now.

Newcastle have defied his early season predictions to sit in seventh place, with four wins from nine matches.

Paul Merson answers questions during Gillette Soccer Saturday Live with Jeff Stelling on March 19, 2012 at the Bournemouth International Centre in Bournemouth, England.

On Monday evening they face in form Burnley, a tough game already with just one point and one place separating the two teams.

Now Newcastle supporters are convinced their task has been made tougher by Merson’s uncanny knack of predicting their results wrongly.

Merson told SkySports he is tipping a 2-1 away victory for the Toon: “I haven’t gone for Newcastle to win once this season but that changes today! Burnley’s home form has been a little shaky and Newcastle are on a roll.

“They are punching well above their weight – if they finish sixth Rafa Benitez will be manager of the season.”

After losing their first two matches of the season, there was anxiety on Tyneside that the team were in for a difficult campaign, especially after an underwhelming transfer window.

Newcastle’s success has been based on a strong defence and Burnley could be without injured forward Chris Wood, who is battling to make the game.
