Newcastle United fans right to be suspicious about club’s transfer plans

Newcastle United claim that they are not a ‘selling club’ – but the raft of departures in recent seasons suggests otherwise.

Newcastle United fans might have something to say about the fact that they do not consider themselves a ‘selling club’, as reported by The Chronicle.

The recent departures of Georginio Wijnaldum and Daryl Janmaat, not to mention the likes of Demba Ba, James Milner and Yohan Cabaye in years gone by don’t exactly back up the claims. After all, since Mike Ashley bought the club in 2007, his desire to sign young players and sell them on for a profit is well established.

It appears that, from the outside in, a ‘selling club’ is exactly what Newcastle United are under the Sports Direct tycoon.

Yet, according to a club statement as reported by The Chronicle, nothing could be further from the truth; “The club explained that it does not need, or intend, to sell key players in order to fund arrivals.

“However it confirmed that any funds received during the summer would contribute to the overall transfer budget.”

This, however, is far easier said than done. With reports linking the likes of Karl Darlow (below), Jamaal Lascelles and Aleksandar Mitrovic with a summer move away from St James’ Park, it will be interesting to see whether these claims will be reinforced.

Actions speak louder than words after all and letting the trio leave at a profit would only raise further doubts among the fanbase as to whether Ashley genuinely wants to help the club progress or merely sell off their assets for a quick buck.
